Event Description:
After almost exactly one year, the Town of Garner is ready to unveil both its Transportation Plan and Streetscape Design for Downtown to its public. Both plans are in their final stages, and will be presented for public review and comment in the Lobby Area of the Garner Historic Auditorium, located in the Old Garner High School building, at 742 West Garner Road March 3, 2010 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Beverages and food will be provided to those that attend, as will the chance to win dinner for two. The public is encouraged to drop by anytime, with presentations at the top of each hour. Staff will be available to explain displays and the contents of the proposed plans throughout the evening. Scott Lane, Director of Planning for The Louis Berger Group, Inc. and the Project Director for the Transportation Plan project, describes the efforts that went into making the plans as “a really collaborative effort between the Town’s steering committee, staff professionals, and the citizens of Garner. These are two of the most sophisticated transportation plans ever completed in North Carolina, requiring collaboration with broad segments of the public, railroad authorities, various transportation agencies, and considerable public input and technical thought. These are two important planning documents that will have lasting consequences for the way people move in and around Garner for many years to come.” The Transportation Plan contains detailed recommendations about new and expanded roadways; public transportation options; new sidewalk and pedestrian facilities; and improvements for bicyclists. The Streetscape Design Plan was the product of several charrette-style meetings in 2009, and details specific recommendations for transforming the street environment of the historic downtown area, tying into a revitalization plan now underway as well as the previous North Garner Plan.
